trick or treat

Emma asked me this morning why we celebrate Halloween. My thought was, "That is exactly my point as to why am against this holiday. There is no reason to celebrate Halloween." I admit it. I am a Halloween hater. Love fall. Hate Halloween. Wish we could do away with the whole holiday. I don't like spending money/time on costumes. I don't like going door to door for candy. I don't like my kids getting candy for no good reason. I don't like having to become the Keeper of the Candy who must dole it out (never in the amount the kids want) for the next few weeks. I don't like Halloween.

I do have kids though. And I do like them. I think the Halloween festivities this year were satisfactory to them. We made sugar cookies in the morning and then decorated them with our homeschooling neighbors (we get together every Wednesday).
We raided my sister in law's costume box this year so I managed to spend no money or time this year. We ended up with a witch, Obiwan Kenobi, Spiderman and a Musketeer.
I was so grateful for the mild weather this year and for the fact that Daylight Savings starts next week. Emma went off with a friend so I headed out with the boys to trick or treat in the neighborhood. We lasted for about an hour and a half. Dave made it home from Boise (YEAH!) around 7 and went with us for the last street.

Every year I want to plan a big party a few days before Halloween and then do away with trick or treating. Every year I don't. Perhaps, it is the fact that I don't want to warp my children even further. They are homeschooled after all. And their friends aren't supposed to bring presents to their birthday parties. And...and...and a whole lot of other things. So even though I don't like the holiday, we will probably keep participating. Maybe next year I'll get into it a bit more but don't count on it.

Ok, so we're a little different with this holiday. Too funny! But, I love your candid expression of your feelings on it. And a very cute pic of YOU! (the kids aren't too shabby either:))

Why aren't their friends supposed to bring presents to their birthday parties?

Why can't Halloween be like the ultimate children's holiday just for fun, even though there's no good reason for it? Didn't you like it as a kid? I think we need to get to the root of your feelings here. Hating Halloween sounds grim.

Don't hate Halloween, just the plethora of candy that comes with it. And the cavities that follow. Toothbrushes for all!

Cute costumes! (Are you gonna eat those Kit Kats...)

I'm trying to decide if that grin on your face is in secret delight as you gather the candy to you to hide it and steal a few delicious bites in the coming days OR if that grin is saying okay I did it because I'm a good mom now let's get this evil addicting stuff swept outta my sight.

As to the reason you hate Halloween, probably because you've got one of your mom's genes. Although I did think this year that if folks are going to celebrate the orange/black holiday they should decorate their houses like UT folks do. I was there last year helping with Sawyer so I noticed this year that CO is lame in that area. Not that I would choose to decorate my own house...

I agree with you Lindsay! Its not a holiday at all. I don't mind costumes (other times of the year), so perhaps from now on, I'll do Costume parties for birthdays. We boycotted the ward party/trunk-or-treat on Saturday night and went to the lovely Meridian Symphony concert "Call of the Wild" instead. Sabrina has pneumonia, so she didn't trick or treat, and Roderic was done after 3 houses. Do you remember the years we'd go to Chili's for dinner with the Vannan's? Good times.

I'm with you, Lindsay! I don't hate Halloween passionately but I did have a hard time with this SPT because it's just not an exciting holiday for me--having to come up with costumes, spending a fortune on candy, sitting on my porch handing out candy to huge teenagers who shouldn't even be out.

That said, I do enjoy watching my kids get into the holiday. They had so much fun this year and that makes everything so worth it! :) Ever since I did my SPT I have been thinking that maybe the reason I don't like the holiday is because I DON'T do much with it...make sense? Maybe if I threw myself into it heart and soul (decorations, costumes, silliness) just for the pure joy of it...maybe I would like it more...maybe.

I completely agree on every point. I'd go so far as to say I'm a Halloween Grinch. Thanks for making me feel better about my distaste for a totally unnecessary holiday.

Lindsay,

WHAT?!! You DON'T like Halloween? I agree it is a lot of work and stress getting everything together, but for your little ones, it is the greatest holiday just second to Christmas! People everywhere are giving candy...for free! What's not to like?
Glad to see you suffered through it for your kids. They are only little once.

There are many things I do just because it makes the kids happy, Halloween is one of those things.
I didn't know you homeschool - I'm sure that could be it's own seperate blog.
Your picture with the candy is beautiful.

We are most definitely in different camps on this one! But, I love you anyway!!

Hate Halloween all you want! it's a free country...and we like variety. Being closer to your camp gives me understanding too. I like the day...the trick or treating and the neighborhood being all out and about on the streets at the same time, but I think it should be limited to that (and maybe a party). But, I'm definitely done with all the ugly witches and fake blood. Who likes that stuff????
