Slade just participated in his first Pinewood Derby at the end of last month. I don't have anything to compare it to but the night seem to be very well organized and efficient. Dave let Slade take the lead in making the car. He did all the painting himself. His car was underweight so they had him tape some pennies on the back. He didn't win a single race. In fact he came in dead last by a long shot every time. Perhaps, we'll have to debate how much parental involvement there should be in things another day. He seemed happy enough with whole affair though perhaps a bit bored. He was awarded "Most Original Hand Painted Design."

I remember those Pinewood Derby Days and all the very overly involved dads. I remember having old Pinewood cars around for years on boys' shelves, they were so proud of them whether they'd won anything or not.
I think I've participated in making 9 derby cars now as a dad. No winners among them yet, but they are pretty unique and displayed proudly in rooms. I think only 9 more to go...
