make a rainbow

I originally saw the idea for a Rainbow Cake on Hostess with the Mostess. Followed the link to the tutorial here. This is what I did:

Make two boxes of white cake mix according to package directions.

Put about 1 1/2 cups of batter each into six bowls.
Mix in food coloring. Use gel food coloring. Not the liquid kind.

Pour about 2/3 cups batter in pan for the first three colors and about 1/3 cups batter for the last three. Reverse the order for the second pan. Bake. (I don't remember the exact times but I did add additional time for these to cook since the batter was doubled. I started with the suggested baking time and then checked every few minutes from there.)

When your niece asks if she can lick the bowls, don't just assume she means with the help of a spoon. She and little brother will end up just sticking their hands in all that wonderful color.

When the cake is cooled you can frost however you wish. Mine was all crooked but I didn't let that bother me! It makes such a pretty cake. I think this will be fun to use with different color schemes on different occasions. I love color!

I was wondering how you did that cake! Thanks for sharing. I will have to try it sometime...

I love it!!!! And I love your photography, too. How did you get the different colored batters to stay in a target shape in the pan without blending?

That's really cool. I was wondering about the blending too. Why didn't the batter seep into the other colors and turn everything into a yucky green/grey?

This is just fun and fantastic! I can't wait to try it! Jeremy's birthday cake just got colorful...

I have no idea about the physics of why the batter is not mixing. All I know is it didn't. Maybe because its thick enough. Anyhow, try it!

Ever thought about going into magazine/product photography? Wow! Those pics were great. P.S. You do know that Carson is a boy, and therefore not your niece, right? Ah, well. You can't be perfect at everything.

Well it actually was Avery my NIECE who asked to lick the bowls. Carson just joined in. I fixed the post to reflect that so I can still be perfect. :)

As beautiful as the cake was, Dad would still prefer carrot cake or oatmeal cake, something heavy and rather colorless. So thanks for making it 'specially for ME!
