A few months ago our ward called a new Primary presidency. One thing they have been trying to emphasize with the children is the scriptures. They mark a scripture (even with Jr. Primary) almost every week. At the start of the year, they also encouraged the children to read the whole Book of Mormon this year. To help with that, they give them a book mark with what verses to read each day.
While at the Primary board meeting a few weeks ago, I felt inspired to try to complement the work the Primary presidency is doing with my children at home. We have been doing SSP (scripture song prayer) with the kids each night but I didn't feel like they were getting much out of the scripture reading. They usually were jumping around on the couches or bugging each other. I knew we needed to do better.
Dave and I bought a Book of Mormon for each child. First, I wanted them to be able to take scriptures to church to mark in Primary. Second, I wanted them each to be able to open their scriptures each night at SSP. Dave and I also decided that we would paraphrase more and read only a few selected verses each night. This would allow us to explain more about what was happening and concentrate on the stories. We have the kids each read a verse or two.
What a difference this has made. Nathan was so excited to get his own Book of Mormon. He carried it around for a day or two. They are excited to find their own book in the stack each night. The boys ask us to help them find exactly where they are. They are so much calmer and seem to be understanding much more. Its only been a few weeks but I am so thrilled with the changes.I am excited to see what a difference it makes over the whole year.

I'd love to see a copy of your bookmark. We found it's best to have our kids sitting at the table.
The Fechser family in our ward always had their 3 boys bring their scriptures and a notebook to church. Every week the boys took notes on the speakers during sacrament meeting which the family then discussed during FHE. Seeing it was one of those times I wished I could have do overs in raising my own children.
